I Need Help

June 8th I turn 30.  Yep.  The big Three-O.  I'm really not sad about it.  Really.  I'm hoping to make my thirties my best decade ever.  I feel like I spent a lot of my twenties self conscious, overwhelmed, and well... lost.   It's when I started working out, losing weight, and doing things I never thought I could, that a switch was flipped in my head and I began to feel more comfortable in my own skin.  I've also learned a few things about myself.  I'm independent.  I'm strong.  I know I'm capable of great things.  And so geared with that knowledge, I'm looking forward to a healthier, happier 30-year-old me.
I've thought long and hard about what I want for my birthday and I have come up with the best birthday present ever.  (Now this is where YOU come in.)  Join me in a 100-Day Challenge.  Now before you moan and groan and decide to go click out of my blog, hear me out!  I need some inspiration right now, and I know all of you out there can inspire me.  When I found out I had lung cancer last summer, I was blown away by the outpouring of love and support I felt during that hard time in my life.  Now that the cancer is gone, times are happier, and I feel this is a small way I can give back to all you who carried me last year, and of course, this gives me a chance to get inspired by all of you!
So here is the deal, starting Tuesday, March 1st the 100 Days-to-30 Challenge begins.  I will post every day beginning March 1st for 100 days, (the 100th day being June 8th, my 30th birthday.)  I will post my stats (weight, measurements), my workouts, food I'm eating, my goals, tips and tricks, pics, answer questions, whatever.  Then I would like those of you who will commit to do this challenge with me to set at least ONE goal, and no goal is too big or too small.  Whether it's walking a couple times a week, attempting a Couch-2-5K program, or training for a marathon.  Just set a goal.  Then leave comments on my posts about your goals, your diet, your workouts, your progress, etc.  You can post as often or as little as you want.  Then on my birthday, June 8th, I will post all of your stories.  If you're comfortable, you can even email me pics and I will post them along with your story.  Of course, I'll post my before & after pics, all my stats, and talk about my goals, too.  I'm so excited about this and I hope a lot of you participate.  If you already have a regular exercise routine and healthy diet, or you don't, it doesn't matter, we ALL can be better.  We ALL can push a little harder.  I can't wait to get this started, and hear all about you guys, and get inspired.
SO?  Who is with me???!!!  (Please leave a comment so I know who is participating.)  You have SIX days to get yourself mentally ready for this, so think about it, think about your goals and commit to making a change NOW!
6 more days and counting...  ;)

I'm in. My goal? I am looking to sleep at least 8 hours and get up at the same time each morning for those 100 days. Sounds dumb but Mexico and the cartels have turned me into an insomniac. (I was already not a fab sleeper.) Sleep should help solve 90% of my other issues. Love ya!

Here's to you! 30 is gonna look great on you :) I'm just so grateful you are here to celebrate.

(And I love my 30's so far.)

What if I have a goal to write an awesome collection of short stories before June 8th? Can I inspire you with that? I'll name one of my characters after you...

I am in! Love the idea. I signed up for the San Diego Half Marathon with some friends. It's June 5th, perfect timing. So my goal is getting in shape for that.

Are you trying to guilt me? Okay, Truman and I will join.

You are such an inspiring person James! You really are! You're always thinking of others and working to be your best. I love it! So I am in.
I was trying to do Insanity with Sean T, but its kindof ridiculously hard. I am trying to get us a membership to golds because I don't like 24. So, I don't know what I'll commit to do but I'll do something and that includes no eating late, not giving into my sugar cravings, and working out daily. Any ideas? Miss you.

Becky, you're too sweet. I totally know what you mean about getting the right amount of sleep helping solve a lot of problems. When I don't get enough sleep it definitely affects me mentally and physically. It's hard to feel motivated to do anything when you're exhausted!

Whit, yes, set a goal of writing those short stories. (You have to do it anyway, though, right?!) So, while you're thinking up your storylines, go for a tiny run. ;) Just humor me. Or you don't even have to focus on exercise. Just calorie count for 100 days, or no sugar, or whatever. I know you can, so DO it! (said lovingly as only a big sister can)

Nicole, so glad you're jumping in! So jealous. A race in CA will be perfect in early June.

Jake, I have it in writing (kind of), so I'm not letting you off the hook. You will make Truman one happy dog.

Jaci, just saw your post. So happy you're wanting to join!! This is going to be awesome. Please join Gold's, then you can come play with me. ;) As far as ideas go, we can look up races around Memorial Day. A few of my friends LOVE P90X and with that being 90 days that could work. I've heard Insanity is freaking hard. Go to livestrong.com and setup a profile and start tracking what you eat. Focus on calorie counting and watch the sugar and transfats. I think 100 days is a good amount of time to do this. It's not so long where you can't see attaining your goal, but it's enough time to work hard and see results. Can't wait to start with you, and all the others!

Iliana said...

I'll do it. But in a lame way:) My goal is to spend 45 mins 5Xweek on the treadmill (walking probably:). I'm doing it:)

jamieschip said...

Il, that's not lame! Committing and sticking to your goal is the key here. 45 mins. 5 times a week is awesome! So glad you're joining the fun. ;)

Crystal said...

I want to join. I am looking to complete P90X again. But since I have already done it I don't count that as me goal. My goal is to actually complete an exercise everyday. Wake up early and get it done so nothing else gets in the way. I have skipped way too many days of exercise and then it spirals into feeling bad and eating bad.

Meighan said...

I'm in. You already know I am training for the Wasatch Back so I'm trying to run 3-4 times a week. I also want to lose 10 pounds. I thought running consistently would knock off a couple already, but I have been running since December and my clothes still fit the same. Sooo it's calorie counting for me. Boo. But I know it's what I need to do to get where I want to be. So long story short my goals are to Run lots and eat less :). (oh and get up at 5:00 am with you every Monday to get our behinds whooped by Steph in kickboxing. Hurts so good baby.)

Jamie I love you, you are such an inspiration and I am happy to do this with you my friend.

My goal is to train for a 60 mile bike race in June. I might miss you 100 days by a few days but not much.

Sounds like a good plan!

jamieschip said...

Crystal, so happy you're joining! What results did you get from P90X when you did it the first time?

Meighan, I figured you would jump on the bandwagon with me. So excited for you to do Wasatch Back. You're going to do awesome! (and those 10 lbs. are coming off you, and then you will need all your pants back. :). ) love you, too!

Em, are you doing Little Red? I have a few friends doing that one and I think it's June 4th. 60 miles is an awesome goal! Please tell me you have a padded seat and padded shorts! I have a bruised butt just talking about it! :) so glad you're going to do this!

Elle, just saw your post on FB about doing the Century. Glad you will share your experiences for thus little challenge. I can't wait to hear all about your amazing bike rides with Steph, Sharie, and Abby. You girls are going to do awesome!

Stephanie said...

Jamie you are awesome! I love, love, love challenges. I live by them. I am always trying to get my husband to do healthy challenges with me. You know I am such a competetive person and these days the only person I can be competetive with is myself (since my husband is not competetive)
:) I am definitely in. Sadly my goal was to run a marathon this year but about a month ago I ruptured my Achilles tendon playing basketball and had to have surgery. I am still unable to walk on it. I will just have to adjust my goal a little cause like you said, "We can always do better." My goals will be to go to bed before or at 10 each week night and wake up before or at 6. Sleep is a major weight loss boost. My physical goal will have to be to get my left leg back to full strength. I have to calf and upper thigh muscle anymore. I think I will think of some other goals and right them down and keep you up to date on them. Thank you for doing this because I am turning 30 on June 29th and like you I am REALLY looking forward to my 30's!

Stephanie said...

oh one more thing. I have been following the S diet and I will continue to do it but for real this time:) It's simple. No Sweets, Snacks, or Seconds except on the days that start with an S :)

jamieschip said...

Steph, I hear you on the competitive thing. You get drive you didn't know you had when competition is involved. That SUCKS about your achilles tendon. I just checked out your blog and saw the picture. Ouch!! Being injured is the worst! I had bad IT band stuff going on with my first half marathon, but ran through it (rather hobbled through it) anyway. Last year before we found out about the tumor I was training for Top of Utah and had a stress fracture in my right leg and had to take 6 weeks off of running. Hardest thing ever! Then of course recovering from the lung surgery has been hard. So I know all about coming back from hard stuff. I know you will rock it, though. (Glad we can celebrate being 30 together in June! We are going to be hot little 30 year old mamas ;) )

Also, I LOVE the S diet and I am going to steal your idea and incorporate it into my diet. So glad you're joining and can't wait to hear about your progress!

Exercise 3 days a week. Eat less junk food!!

Thanks Jamie!

I will run every... week! Just for you, James.

jamieschip said...

YAY, Selena! So glad you're joining. 3 days a week sounds great. Maybe Madeline will want to join. (Saw that post about her doing step with you. So cute!)

Whit, thanks for committing. I promise you will thank me by the end of this. If not, at least your heart, lungs, and brain will thank me. ;) Love you.

Jaime I love this idea!!! I would love to join your 100 day challenge. It will fall perfectly into my 11th Wedding Anniversary which is May 27th in which I would like to have lost 40 pounds by then. I am going to steal the idea of the "S" diet as well as committing to working out a min of 5 times a week. Can't wait to see everyone's outcome.

I already have a team formed for the Shamrock Run here in Portland on March 13 so this is a great way to keep me in check!!!

Thanks for the inspiration!!!!!!

I want to do this! I need some motivation myself :o) Sweets only once a week and exercise at least once a week. I know that's not big, but it's a good start for me. (Especially during this cold weather - not wanting to go outside for longer than I have to!) Yeay for you and for your motivation to me! :D

Ashleigh said...

Alright, I've been trying to decide what would be a goal for me. I want something that will push me, but will also be realistic and attainable. I've decided to only have sweets one day a week (that's a hard one for me) and to run 3 times a week. I'm training for the Hood to Coast Relay, but struggling with getting my runs in as often as I should. If I say I will run 3 times a week, I gotta do it! Hopefully by the end of 100 days I will be able to run 3 miles in 30 minutes. I'm struggling with my running, but I need to be able to at least do that before the Hood to Coast. I'd like to be able to run a 9 minute mile consistently, but I don't know if that's going to happen anytime soon. I'll try, though. Thanks Jamie!

Deborah said...

I will join! I have been doing ok, but need to kick it in gear! I will exercise at least 3 times a week-aim for 5. I started a Yoga DVD and love it! I will also focus on what I put in my mouth. All I need for that is to focus and plan ahead.

I'm on board. I've already been trying to get into shape, lose the baby weight and be ready to do the Bear Lake Brawl sprint triathlon at the end of August. I've been keeping stats, sort of, since late October. My goal is to excercise 4 times a week, one of which is swimming, and eat only 100 calories after dinner (night snacking really gets me.) Thanks Jamie for giving me a chance to elucidate what I'm doing and it's always nice to know someone else is doing it too. :)

Love you girl,
Kristy

Currently doing P90X and feeling that I need a small break from exercise so consistently...BUT I love the challenge. I am also planning on trying to run a 1/2 marathon in June. I'd like to commit to being in the word at least 4 times a week for the 100 days...a different kind of "exercise" if you will....
Love you sister,
Kam

jamieschip said...

Nicole, welcome to the group! I lost 35 lbs. two years ago and it was the BEST thing I ever did! I've heard the Shamrock Run is so fun. Wish I was there to do it. Good luck, and keep checking in!

Tammy, I know I already emailed you, but I wanted to post on here too. Starting a lifestyle change is always big so don't downplay what you're doing. Sweets once a week and exercise during the week are great goals!

Ash, I was waiting to see what you would put. I know you're doing the Whittle My Middle blog, too so if you wanted you could talk about all that over here. I'm doing the sweets thing, too. I actually really like the S diet that Steph mentioned (no sweets, snacks or seconds, except on days that start with S.) I'm going to do that because completely eliminating sweets for me isn't an option. Us Call girls have that nice little chocolate gene in us that I don't think we can ever lose! You will do 3 in 30. Have you been doing speed workouts? I know when I started doing those, that really helped speed up my long runs.

Deborah, YAY! I was hoping you would join. I know you've already been going strong, but hopefully this will give us all a little kick in the butt. I love yoga, too! So glad you found something you really like. I have some friends who are really into the bikram yoga and have seen some awesome results. I've never done it but it sounds intense. Exercising 3-5 times a week is a great goal!

Kristy, SOOO glad you're doing this with me! (Just wish you lived in the same city, heck the same state, so we could do it together physically.) A Sprint Tri is on my list of to-dos eventually. Sounds so fun, mixing it up like that. 100 cals after dinner is great. I know all about the late-night munchies. Great goal, friend. Love you, too.

Kam, are seeing big results from P90X? I know what you mean about wanting to break up exercise monotony. (That's a big part in why I wanted to start this. With setting some goals, it will push me out of my routine and comfort zone.) Is it the Helvetia Half you're wanting to do? That's on my list, along with the Hood 2 Coast. Would love to do both! Wish you were here so we could exercise together. It would be fun to push each other. You're awesome, Kam. So glad you're joining. Love you!

ME! I need to lose 5 pounds. That sounds ridiculously simple except that I've been battling it for a year and a half! So frustrating :P. So, my goal is to be down to 137 by your birthday. I'm going to actually do my weights twice a week instead of just thinking about it when I get done with my run and deciding not to...

Crystal said...

When I did P90X I really was not doing it to lose weight. I just wanted a new challenge, to tone and feel stronger. I accomplished all of that. Plus I had the added bonus of losing 4 lbs and 7 inches. And my stomach was the flattest it had been since having kids. I felt stronger than just about any other time in my life. The best part was my legs felt stronger, so when I ran my knees didn't get nearly as sore. It actually took a long time for me to see any kind of results. I was probably half way through the whole program before the weight started to come off. And before I could do more than a couple of real push-ups. I liked it though. The reason I want to do a second round.

jamieschip said...

WOW! We already have 21 (including me) committing to this thing. Keep 'em coming!!

Heidi, 5 lbs. is not simple. I know all about trying to lose those last pesky lbs. That's where I'm at now, too. Argh. Well, in 105 days those last lbs. will be gone. We can do this! I'm also adding in more weights, too. Sounds like you and I are on a similar course (besides you running ridiculously long runs! I'll get there, eventually. ;) )

Crystal, that sounds awesome. What would it be like to have a flat and rock hard stomach?! I've thought about doing P90X because I have a few friends who swear by the thing. Hmm... something to think about.

Jamie... I love this! This year a set many goals and now that its almost march I have done great but am starting to loose motivation so this will be great to do. So for my goals,
1.Continue working out 5 days a week.
2.loose my weight I gained while being pregnent plus 10 more lbs. which in total would be 18 lbs.
3.Run a 5k (which i signed up for already) so pretty much do it without dying.
3.Train for a 10k which I want to do in July
4. Continue not eating any meat!

There ya have it!
Love you Jamie!

Mal, those are some awesome goals and I know you can do them all. I've been so impressed with you exercising regularly and you can definitely tell you're losing weight. So happy you're doing this. Which 5K are you doing?

jamieschip said...

Robin, just saw your comment. 7 hours a day is great. I know you get up so early every morning to workout so that will be a good goal for you, to go to sleep earlier. The sweets I struggle with, too, so definitely understand that one. Great goals! Were you thinking about doing a bike race? I thought I remember you saying something about that, but maybe I'm thinking about someone else?

Stephanie said...

Okay, I'm in. My goal is to exercise on the treadmill at least 30 minutes, at least 3x a week. I want to lose my baby weight (can I still claim it as baby weight when she's 15 months old?).

Janica said...

I want to join. I am trying to get these pounds off. I had my baby 8 months ago so they should be almost gone by now. I have about 20lbs to go. My goal is to be active (i.e. running, walking hills at the park, DVDs, etc) at least 5 days per week. I also am trying to do better with portion control and good choices. You are so inspiring in your journey and I hope to get that fire too. I am running a 5K in April and probably again in September. I am also going to see if there are any 10K's that I can try for between there. Thanks for the opportunity!

OK, I'm in too! My goal: rev up my metabolism by: eating smaller healthy meals more often, excercising 4 times a week and increasing my hours of sleep. I'm hoping to drop 15 lbs in 100 days!

Thanks for the motivator! Can't wait to celebrate our success on your 30th!!

Stephanie- So glad you're wanting to join in the fun! 30 minutes, 3x/week is a great goal. (And YES, you can still claim baby weight after 15 months! ;) ) Can't wait to hear all about your progress.

Janica- Glad you made it over! I was so impressed with you when we were doing the weight loss thread. I remember when you said you were trying to get pg, now look, an 8 month old! Being active 5 days a week is awesome! You can do it! I've been wanting to get a food scale for my portion control. It's hard when you want to know exactly how much you're putting in your mouth. 5Ks are so fun. Which ones are you doing?

Kim, YAY!! Glad you're doing this. (I knew you would!) 15 lbs is totally doable, and increasing your sleep hours is a good goal. I don't know how you function somedays, crazy woman working on cute dresses at 2am! I would be exhausted! SO, great goals! Can't wait to do this together with you.

I'm all over it! I'd love to welcome your 30th birthday as a 15 pound slimmer me. I have 2 half marathons coming up...April 30th and May 22nd. I am also doing the Little Red Riding Hood Bike ride for cancer research on June 5th. I am shooting for the 36 mile ride but might bump up to 50 depending on how my training goes. I am working on my eating right now. I'm going to start tracking what I eat for the 100 days and continue my training for both my running events and the bike ride yay!

asdrasdf said...

Hey Lady,
Of course I am in! I am already training for century rides this summer, so that doesn't count. What I really need to do it eat well! Energy is what I am lacking and I think it has to do with my food choices. Braces have made it harder to even eat anything, so I am struggling!
So, I pledge to continue my cycling training, compete in 2 century races this summer, and feed my body well! I may do the calorie tracker just to actually keep track of what kind of calories I am feeding my body.
Thanks for the challenge! You are an inspiration!

My goal is to be to my goal weight by my daugher's first birthday on June 23. I have a little more than 20 lbs. It may be hard but I think it's doable if I really try. P.S. you have an awesome memory.

I rarely look at other blogs lately, lack of time, but I guess I chose the right time to be browsin'! My goals never really change...always to eat healthy, exercise, drink my water...blah blah blah. Even being pregnant they don't change. I feel my last two pregnancies i have really succeeded, but it's inbetween that has suffered for some reason...without change of goals too! I think for this Challenge I will start tracking my progress. My weigh in's....maybe do a few measurements (although being pregnant some of those will DRASTICALLY change int he next 6 weeks) and then maybe even my exercise ability. I have had a lot less stamina this pregnancy so my exercise has decreased per session. So it will be good to track after baby comes how I can work it back up. My goal this pregnancy has been to not gain any weight and so far I have succeeded...but I think since this challenge goes beyond the pregnancy...I'll just stick to tracking my progress.
I had a friend that tried a 100 day challenge. She is a great writer, blogger and was doing great. I was really motivated by her, really excited to be part of her challenge and she bailed horribly...twice. So I look forward to following this with someone i know who will stick to it! You are amazing...keep up the great work!

Well, looks like I'm in, too. I'm preparing to run the New England Ragnar Relay this May with Collette (whose birthday is also on June 8th), so I need to start training anyway. Also, I've been slacking on my morning workouts...

So my goal is this:
Workout five days a week (M-F) from 7-8am. It means I have to get up at 6am, which means I have to be in bed by 10am (which is probably the hardest part for me), but it needs to be done.

100 days... oh boy.

Along with this goal I want to lose at least 1 lb every 10 days (10 lbs total for your challenge length) and get to bed by or before Midnight most nights of the week (currently it is 1-1:30). hey, i'm betnotbe (bethany) from babycenter. i've been following your blog for awhile, since you posted it on babycenter about your weight lost. you are a great inspiration!
this challenge has some great timing for me. I am pregnant when kid #5. My #4 is 10 months old and my #5 is due June 10. So I guess about 100 days.
I need to take care of my body! I let myself go during pregnancy and then work really hard to lose weight after I have a baby. it's a long road and I know it could be so much easier if I didn't give myself free reign to eat anything I want and totally disregard exercise while I am pregnant. I know I can be healthy while im pregnant. I just don't try.

so, my goal is to exercise 4 days a week and to not make treats every day. okay... maybe to only eat when i'm hungry? i don't know. i just need to make an effort. i know how to lose weight, I am just not trying. I am 26 weeks pregnant and by 40 weeks I want to be in better shape than I am now. It is possible!

i'm going to start posting on my weight loss blog again:
www.betnotbe.blogspot.com

great idea to have a challenge! thanks for the open invite.

I am in! After my mini stroke in November, I made a commitment to start working out again after my Dr gave me the "go ahead". 8 weeks ago, I got that green light and I have lost 7.5-8 pounds.I hope to loose those last 8 pounds by June 8th!

When I started I gave up French Fries and went to only drinking Dr. Pepper every other day. I would love to be only drinking 1 can a week by the time this challenge is over (wish me luck...DP is a major weakness of mine...)

I also track my calories and exercise on: myfitnesspal.com. I LOVE this FREE website! It has been a huge help for me!

Thanks for the motivation to continue on!

k here we go, I'm all about if I say it, I have to do it. So I'm in for the challenge. I normally love to workout and eat healthy but I throw caution to the wind when I'm pregnant so it might be good for me to reign things in a bit.

Here's my goals:

1. no soda! This will be huge for me since I tend to drink more during pregnancy

2. workout 3X a week, even if it ends up just being long walks

3. no eating past 8:30pm

I figure I'll keep the other 2 goals a little easier since the no soda will be a killer for me ;) Thanks for making us all take a look at ourselves and figure out what we can do better at

Ok Jamie- I'm I'll do it! I am training for a triathalon. My baby is 3 months, and I've done some running, but I need to train for something so I can step it up and be more consistent.I am excited to read your blog for motivation! :) You are so awesome! Love ya!

Is it too late to join?! I saw your post a few days ago and actually started planning, but I'm only just now getting back to my computer. You are an inspiration to me!! I think you're the extra bit of motivation I need to stop talking about exercising and actually do it...especially with all these other wonderful people working towards similar goals! :) We have a vacation planned on June 14th, so the timing is perfect - thank you!!

I want to feel STRONG again as well as loose 4-6 inches...in all my saggy, squishy, floppy areas. And I'd LOVE to to have a toned and flat stomach (without being completely exhausted from holding it in for less than a minute) ;)

I will go to the gym 2-3x/week, tone & lift weights 2x/week...and I will get on the floor and play with my kids!

...I'm sure going to bed before midnight and snacking on healthy food would help too...so I'll try to keep that in mind every day as well. :)

Maybe I can even work up to doing P90X?!
