Day 21- 100 Day Challenge

Better Health Article: Sugar Addicts Guide to Overcoming Sugar Addiction- My cousin and aunt have committed to eating nothing with sugar in it for the challenge and they have done great so far the past 3 weeks.  This would be a huge challenge for me because admittedly, I have a sweet tooth.  I know I'm not the only one out there, and I found this article that might hit a little too close to home for some of us.

QOTD: It's a little late so I'll write one tomorrow after I get back from my strength training session.

My Daily Update: I went to body combat at 5:30am and for some reason, I wasn't in the zone.  I pushed hard but my lungs were having a hard time and I felt like I was sucking air the last 20 minutes.  Oh well.  I made it through and that's all that matters.  I'm excited for my weight session with Christine tomorrow!
So, I had a good talk this morning with Steph, one of my aerobics instructors/my boss at the studio/Emma's dance teacher, etc. I asked her about the whole calorie intake vs. calories burned and realized I think I've been doing things a little wrong.  I've been doing some research and then after talking with Steph, I really think I haven't been eating enough on my workout days.  It will be interesting to hear what my trainer tells me tomorrow.  I REALLY want a BodyBugg.  It's so hard not knowing exactly how much I burn during the day.  Everyone's bodies are so different and I know I don't have a great metabolism.  If there is anyone out there with one, I would love to borrow it for two weeks, just so I can get a good idea of what my usual daily burn is.  Anyone??!!

My Comments to You:

Ash- That's alright.  We all have bad days.  Important thing is you're back to it today.  The video is coming.  Jake is working on it now and I'll get it on Facebook tonight.

Janica- That's a good idea of keeping your goals posted so you can be reminded daily.  6 days definitely is a lot and we don't want you to burn out.  Better to take a rest day when you feel like it then start fresh the next day.

QOTD: None (Weekend, baby!)

My Daily Update: No workout today but I plan to hit it bright and early tomorrow for the 5:30am combat class.  My mom is coming with me and will do elliptical and bike, while I'm in combat.  She has a torn meniscus in her left knee and can't do any running, jumping, or twisting, so combat is definitely out.  She sees an ortho next month and will learn if she needs surgery or not.  Hoping she gets it fixed and is back to her normal active self really soon.  Love you, mom.

My Comments to You:

Kristy- I had no idea you guys were trying to sell your house.  How exciting and stressful!  And yes, cleaning and organizing burns calories.  Just the fact you're aware of what you're eating is huge, and I'm impressed you're doing it while nursing.  Wish you were here so we could workout together.  The days at the fieldhouse bring back so many good memories!  Miss you!

My Daily Update: No workout today.  I'm getting Emma ready this morning for her first dance competition and I'll be gone with her until 7 or 8pm.  I'm sure I'll burn some calories, running around the competition helping the directors make sure everything runs smoothly.  Then my mom comes into town tonight, around 8:30pm.  YAY!

Better Health Article: Lose Your Fear of Lifting: Loved this article on Yahoo! news today.  It explains 12 reasons why women should weight lift.  Check it out!

QOTD Friday: What are your weekend plans?

Emma's first dance competition is tomorrow so I will be with her most of the day.  I can't wait to see her compete.  All the dancers at the studio have been working so hard this past year, and it's nice to finally have some fun competitions that they can enjoy and show off all their hard work.

My Daily Update: This morning I ran 3 miles on the treadmill, with an average 10:15 pace.  Not too bad, especially considering a couple months ago I could barely do one mile under 12 minutes.  I feel my lungs getting stronger and that makes me so happy.  After the treadmill I did 15 minutes on the stair climber and again, sweat all over that machine.  Sick!  Some GREAT news!  I met this girl, Christine, at the studio.  Her daughter is in Emma's dance class and I had seen her at the gym a lot.  Turns out she does body building competitions and she just started as a personal trainer at Gold's two weeks ago.  I saw her today at the gym and she offered me a free 1-hour session on Tuesday at 9am.  I cannot wait to get my butt kicked by her, and to pick her brain about tips to help me get to my goals.  I also spoke to this girl, Shannon, who goes to the gym all the time.  She just had her 4th kid 10 months ago and looks incredible.  Talking with her was inspiring.  She has a body a lot like mine (kind of an athletic build, not stick skinny) but she is chiseled.  I've seen her do hovers with a 45 lb. weight on her back and she just pushes 110% every time she works out.  She said something today that really clicked with me.  She said "I have 4 kids and am busy and so the time I spend at the the gym, that hour, I have to make count.  I have to leave it all here and give my everything because it's the only time I have to work on me."  So true.  I don't want to waste any of my gym time because that time really is precious.  I want to know that I gave it all and then can feel good the rest of the day, knowing I did my best.  I totally get Shannon.  And Christine.  Totally inspired by these two ladies.

My Comments to You:

Traci- I'm so impressed with you guys!  I can't imagine how hard it has been for you to give up soda for this long but the fact your are doing it shows how mentally strong you are!  I hate when I eat late, too.  And I agree with you, you need to eat.  Don't skip a meal.  Those quesadillas sound yummy.  Do you remember the name of that Orem restaurant?

Kale- For me, as long as I eat smaller meals/snacks throughout the day, I'm fine.  It's when I go for long stretches without eating that I feel the lack of energy.  If I'm hungry, I eat, but I make sure it's a healthy choice.  I usually eat a banana or 2 eggs, or a fruit smoothie for breakfast.  I'll have fruit, granola bars, toast w/peanut butter and sliced bananas, nuts, turkey wraps, etc for snacks.  Lunch and dinner I try to keep them smaller portions.  That's why I like the Healthy Choice dinners and Progresso soups, because it's portioned well.  I wasn't trying to say everyone should do it my way.  Part of the reason I wrote what I did, too, was because it surprised me how full I felt all day, despite the low calorie count, and I think the big reason was because of the foods I chose.  They kept me feeling full, despite the low calories.  Something I have to remind myself, too, is that not one body is the same, so what works for one person may not work for someone else.

Beth- You are doing incredible!  And thanks again for the pics.  Can't wait to post them in 82 days! ;)

Ash- I feel the exact same way about Olive Garden.  I used to love it but in the last couple years it's gone downhill for me, except I do still love their minestrone soup.  Yum!  I think I've only eaten at Quizno's once, and Panera with mom and dad once, too.  We will have to go there next time we are all together.

Better Health Article: 8 Astonishing Benefits of Walking: I know that walking is good for you, but I didn't think about some of these benefits.  The great thing about walking is that ANYONE can do it!  So what are you waiting for?!!

QOTD Thursday: What is your favorite restaurant and favorite dish?

I'm not sure I have a "favorite".  I do like Italian food and Mexican food (as long as it's not too spicy.)  When it comes to fast food, I will choose Subway hands down.  I like the sweet onion chicken teriyaki sandwich.  It's under 400 calories and so yummy!

My Daily Update: Today was Body Combat.  I felt the rib pain doing triple elbows so went a little easy on that, but overall it was a good workout.  It's my time of the month (TMI for you all) and I feel bloaty and a tad sluggish.  I also decided today and I looked in the mirror during my workout, that I NEED new workout clothes.  Most of my tops are a little short so when I do kicks and jumps you see my belly.  Don't like that, so I'm on the hunt for a top or two.  Hopefully I can find something I like and that's cheap.

So, I have something on my wishlist.  I want THIS.  It's the BodyBugg.  I would love to know how many calories I'm burning throughout the day, compared to what I'm putting into my body, and see my sleep pattern, etc.  Technology is so amazing.  I'm still loving my Garmin Forerunner that Jake bought me 2 Christmases ago.  LOVE it!  I love on my long runs how I can look down and see exactly how far I've gone, what my pace is, how many calories I'm burning, etc.

Yesterday I ate around 1250 calories and I was never hungry the entire day.  Banana for breakfast, sushi and Greek yogurt for lunch, watermelon and 1/2 of a Fiber One bar for snacks, and for dinner I ate 2 california rolls, a Healthy Choice 300 cal pasta dish, and some Greek yogurt for dessert.  I burned around 620 calories at the gym.  I wanted to mention that when I workout, I don't account for those calories I burn and add them to the amount of calories I eat that day.  (For example, I ate 1250 but worked out 620, so making my total calories for the day 1870.  I DON'T do that!)  On Saturdays when I do my long runs, I might add an extra 100-200 cals but that's it.  I had a friend who asked and thought that was a good question and should address that on here.

My Comments to You:

Ash- I could relate to everything you wrote about your Whittle My Middle blog.  And YES, I will be posting your pics at the end of this, although, you will have to take new pics because I'm sure you will be even more toned than you are now, especially with all the running you are going to be doing.

Annie- SO glad to hear of your success!  I know what you mean about feeling crappy after eating crappy.  I hate that.  I couldn't imagine eating like that every day and yet, people do.  I also have never tried apple slices with the Laughing Cow swiss cheese.  I'm definitely going to try it!  Sounds yummy!

Marci- You're right to jump back in and just forget about a bad week.  We all have them, and the important thing is to get back to a good routine and recommit, and it sounds like you're doing that.  We are all counting down to warmer weather over here, too!  On Monday it was 60 degrees and my kids and I were outside playing basketball until 7:30pm.  It was great, and I can't wait until summer so we can keep doing stuff like that!  Biking with your son will be a great workout, pulling the trailer.  Great exercise for your butt and legs.  Sounds like your husband is noticing your changes and that's good.

Better Health Article: 50 Best Snacks for Your Child's Backpack: I received this link from Roxanne, a fellow blogger and content manager for nursingschools.net.  I thought I would share her list of 50 Best Snacks for your kids.  Most of us are parents and could all use more ideas on healthier foods to feed our kids.  I know sometimes I struggle with giving my kids healthier foods over the more convenient, quick foods (that usually are not so healthy.)

Free 5K w/tech shirt included! For any of you wanting to try a 5K but don't want to pay the money to register, this is a great option.  The Salt Lake Running Company is putting on their 2nd Annual Free 5K Fun Run.  It's Saturday, April 30th and you pick up your free tech t-shirt between 6:30-7:15am, there is a raffle between 7:15 and 7:45am, and the race starts at 8am.  All participants have to register before the race and registration opens March 29th and will close April 10th.  All registration will be conducted online and they are only allowing 1000 participants so you will need to sign up early.  I will post more info when I get it about registration, the course, etc.

QOTD Wednesday: What inspires you to be better (mentally, physically, spiritually)?

I've noticed now that we are past the 2-week mark, some are losing a little steam.  I will tell you, the first couple weeks are always the hardest when you're starting something new.  You just have to recommit and remind yourself why you're doing this.  So, I want to know what inspires you to keep pushing?  I have people all around me who inspire me on a daily basis.  I love to see driven people, working hard toward something great.  It pushes me a little harder, watching the pregnant girl in Body Combat squat lower than me and jump higher than me, my friend Steph who comes to teach a Body Attack class despite puking all weekend (and yet no one can tell she has been sick), the 70-year old lady who is at the gym every day doing weights and cardio classes, and my friend Marcy who is a widow with 4 kids, teaches Zumba, and has the best 6-pack I've ever seen.  People inspire me.  I love watching Biggest Loser for that very reason.  Ben and I watched last night's episode and during the "last chance workout" I just wanted to jump up and do what they were doing.  So inspiring to watch people push so hard.

My Daily Update: I warmed up on the treadmill and ran 1/2 mile to get my legs warm.  Then I spent 20 minutes on the elliptical, 15 minutes on the stair climber, and then finished out the last 30 minutes of the Body Attack class.  I have a love/hate relationship with the stair climber.  It's the hardest cardio machine for me, so I love it, but hate it, too.  I think I sweat on every inch of my stair climber and despite spraying it down with disinfectant afterward, I still felt sorry for the guy who jumped on after me.  Yuck!

I spent an hour walking through Costco today with the goal of picking out healthier foods for my family.  I checked every label and thought carefully about what I put into my cart.  I was excited to see watermelons out for the first time since last fall.  I thought I would give it a try, knowing they really aren't in season yet.  (Update: cut it up for lunch and the kids were in heaven.  They devoured nearly 1/5 of the thing between just the two of them!)  I also bought some California Rolls.  Jake thinks they are okay, but I'm really liking them.  I bought some Fiber One bars, and some Oatmeal Squares cereal (lots of fiber).  I noticed Costco now carries organic brown rice bowls which I am excited to try.  Also, yesterday I went to Target and bought three different brands of Greek yogurt.  After I try all three I will let you know what I think and rank them.

My Comments to You:

Tiffany- Way to make it through your first day at CrossFit.  Are you able to move this morning?! ;)  Great job tracking your food.  That is going to be huge in getting you to your goal.

Ashleigh-  Thanks for you comment about what you do to relieve stress.  It's definitely a hard one.  So often when we get stressed, we don't eat right and sleep well, which in turn makes us feel worse, and then we don't want to workout.  It's not a good cycle to be in.  So happy your running is coming along!  Go speed racer!  Wish you could come here and run that race with me!  That would be so awesome!  I have a friend who is on a Ragnar team (like H2C) and her dad pulled his hamstring and doesn't know if he can run so I might be their alternate if he has to pull out.  It's June 17-18.  When is H2C?

Selena- YES!  It was your Patti.  I had no clue she worked out there.  Funny I've never seen her until then.  I noticed she was in the cinema room, though, and I never go in there so that probably explains it.  Anyway, it was great to see her and talk to her for a second.

Day 15- 100 Day Challenge

Day 15, 85 days left...

The Google spreadsheet is HERE.  Click on it and make sure to put an X on the days you follow through.

TODAY is the last day to sign up for the Fight for Air Walk/Run with me on June 4th, and still get the 20% discount on the registration (use the code EarlyBird20).  (They have a walk, 5K, 10K, and half marathon so there is an option for any level.)  For all the race info go HERE.  I have created a Team Jamie, so if you want to join go HERE.  I already have 6 other team members doing either the 5K or 10K, and might have two more join this afternoon.  I would love to have more people on the team.  Also, even if you can't do the race, there is still the option to make a donation.  All the proceeds go to the American Lung Association.  (BTW, had to give a little shout-out to my friend, Emily.  She was the first to join Team Jamie and has, therefore, moved up my friend list to spot #1.  Love ya, Em. ;) )

Better Health Article: Couch to 5K: For anyone contemplating doing a race, or just wanting to start running, this website has a lot of great tools to help you get started

QOTD Tuesday: (I'm keeping the same question up from yesterday since no one responded about it.)  This is for my friend, Erin, who just found out her husband is losing his job soon.  She is stressed out and her goal for this challenge has been to not drink any soda for 100 days.  Because of the stress she has been feeling, her first thought is to drink soda.  She doesn't want to and has done well so far in this challenge, but now she is really having a rough time not giving in.  So, here is her question for us: How do you cope with major stresses while not giving in to your cravings (soda, binge, sweets, whatever.)

Our Snack List

turkey wrapped in lettuce
mixed nuts (almonds)
cucumber slices
grapes (frozen)
bananas
apple slices (w/peanut butter or almond butter)
granola bars
Greek yogurt (Zoi or Fage 2% w/packet of Stevia)
rices cakes
edamame
string cheese
hummus w/carrots or celery
avocados
strawberries
blueberries
salad
homemade whole wheat bread
celery w/peanut butter
hard-boiled egg
Extra Sugar-free gum

I roped Jake into doing the 10K with me on June 4th.  Not sure if he's going to hate me or love me by the end of it, but I'm happy we get to do it together.  This is Jake's first race, and hopefully he catches the running bug, or at least understand a little more why I enjoy it so much.  I'm sure he will school me, and I hope he does.  Can't wait!  We are celebrating our 10-year anniversary that weekend, too, so it adds more meaning to us doing it together.

My rib is still hurting so I opted out of doing my normal weight class.  Thought I would take a break from doing upper body this week to give my ribs a little time to heal.  Instead I ran 3.5 miles on the treadmill.  I felt really good my whole run, and even ran the last mile at a 10 minute pace, and finished out the last 1/10th at an 8:34 pace.  I'm slowly coming back and it feels great!  After my run I did lower body weights.  My inner and outer thighs are going to hate me tomorrow.  Tone.  Tone.  Tone.  Love it!

As I walked into the gym this morning, I saw one of my cute nurses, Patty, who took care of me last summer when I was recovering from my lung surgery.  All sorts of emotions came flooding back when I saw her.  It reminded me of all the wonderful people I met during those few weeks.  I thought about the day I found out about the tumor, and how quick everything went after that.  Then I just thought how grateful I was that now I was walking into the gym, just 9 months later, and being able to do all that I have been doing.  I'm really lucky.

My Comments to You:

Kale- I know all about losing muscle tone and totally get that.  After my surgery last summer I weighed the same I do now, but my muscle was gone.  I was jiggly everywhere and it was gross.  That's why in my goal I'm not focusing so much on getting down to a particular number on the scale, but I'm focusing more on toning my body and getting down to a smaller size.  Good luck with your goal.  You're already doing so great and I know you will get to where you want to be!

Chandra- I love your idea of adding gum to our snack list.  I definitely use my favorite (Extra, Polar Ice) as a snack when I'm starting to get the munchies in the afternoon.  You can't go wrong with 5 calories.  Thanks again for joining my team on June 4th.  It's going to be awesome!
